Apricot, Cream, Red, and the Curl

Doodles come in apricot, cream, red, chocolate and parti, and the coat can be tight curls, loose waves or something closer to straight depending on the generation. The face usually carries a beard, a moustache and eyebrows that move independently of everything else. Curl is the hard part of a goldendoodle portrait. Painted badly it becomes a fluffy outline with a face in the middle. Painted well, the coat has direction and weight, and the beard reads as hair rather than as a blur.

Styles That Handle a Curly Coat

Watercolor is the obvious one, because a loose washed edge is already what a curly outline looks like, and apricot and cream coats sit beautifully in pale washes. Impressionist is the surprise. Swirling visible brushwork and a curly coat are close relatives, so the painting looks like the style was invented for the dog. Pop Art flattens the curls into graphic shapes and leans on the beard, which is funnier than it sounds. Renaissance Noble puts the whole beard and eyebrow arrangement in a ruff collar and lets it look like a portrait of a judge.

Photograph the Eyes First

The most common problem with doodle photos is that you cannot see the eyes. Hair grows over them, and a painting built from a photo with hidden eyes will have a face without a focus. Brush the fringe back or catch them just after a groom. Soft light beats bright sun, which burns out a pale curly coat and takes the texture with it. Get close enough that individual curls are sharp. Eye level, and a slight angle to show the beard.
