How to Vet a Pet Portrait Seller Before You Order

Framed pet portrait with order checklist on a warm home desk for choosing a trustworthy pet portrait seller

You've finally decided to get that photo of your dog off your phone and onto your wall. Good for you. But now comes the hard part: picking a seller you can trust. I've been on both sides of this, as a pet parent and as someone who runs a portrait shop, so I know how much it stings to get something that doesn't look like your furry friend. Here's a checklist to help you vet any pet portrait seller, including us. Use it, and you'll be able to order with confidence.

Preview or proof: can you see it before you pay?

The biggest red flag in custom pet art is a seller who takes your money and disappears, only to email you a week later with a finished piece you never got to approve. You should never have to pay for a surprise. Look for a seller who shows you a preview before you commit, or at least offers a proof for your approval before production begins.

At our shop, you upload your photo, pick a style, and see your portrait instantly. No waiting, no wondering. If you don't love it, you can hit regenerate or swap the photo until it feels right. That's the way it should be. If a seller won't show you anything until after you've paid, walk away.

Clear timelines: do they tell you when to expect it?

You're probably ordering this for a reason. Maybe it's a birthday, a memorial, or just because you can't stand another day without that goofy face on your wall. Whatever the reason, you need to know when it'll arrive. A trustworthy seller will give you clear production and shipping timelines, not vague promises like "it'll get there when it gets there."

For reference, our digital files arrive in 1-2 business days, prints and canvas take 1-3 business days to produce, framed prints take 5-7 business days, and premium frames can take up to two weeks. Then add 3-5 business days for US shipping. That's the kind of detail you want to see. If a seller can't give you a straight answer on timing, that's a sign they might not be on top of their orders.

Refund policy: what happens if it's not right?

Even with a preview, things can go wrong. Maybe the colors look different on your wall, or the print arrives with a scratch. A seller who stands behind their work will have a clear, fair refund or reprint policy. Look for language about what happens if you're not satisfied, and whether they'll fix or replace a damaged item.

We personally review every order before it ships. If something's off, we fix it. But if you get your portrait and it's just not what you expected, you deserve a path to make it right. Don't order from anyone who makes you feel like you're stuck with whatever shows up.

Real reviews: what do other pet parents say?

Reviews are your window into a seller's real-world track record. But not all reviews are created equal. Look for reviews that mention specifics: the pet's name, the style they chose, how the portrait captured their pet's personality. Generic five-star blurbs like "great product" could be fake. Pay attention to how the seller responds to negative reviews. Do they get defensive, or do they try to make things right?

On our site, you can read reviews from other pet parents who've ordered custom pet portraits. We're proud of those reviews, and we read every single one. If a seller has no reviews at all, or only reviews on their own site with no way to verify them, be cautious.

Secure checkout: is your information safe?

This one might seem obvious, but it's worth checking. Before you enter your credit card number, make sure the site is secure. Look for "https" in the URL and a padlock icon in your browser. A reputable seller will use a secure payment gateway, and they won't ask for your payment details via email or text.

We use standard secure checkout, and we never see your full payment information. If a site feels sketchy or asks for unusual payment methods, trust your gut and move on.

One more thing: the human touch

Finally, consider whether there's a real person behind the business. Can you contact them with questions? Do they respond? At our shop, I'm the one who reviews every order, and I'm happy to help with anything. That personal attention is what turns a transaction into a keepsake. When you're choosing a seller, you're not just buying a product. You're trusting them with a memory. Make sure they treat it that way.
